I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
We have been redeemed.
We are being redeemed.
We will be redeemed.
How is this possible if all statements are true?

As the days go by, and as I age, let it be known; the things I wasted my time with, and those things with which I did not.

They are all true. And all complicated. And all beautiful.
And I'm very grateful that our God is big enough to be true in all three statements, yet also hold true that He never changes.
I just had conversation about this with Tim and Amanda Long. I think it hinges on your definition of redeemed . Many use redemption through Christ as a way to (or rather to attempt to) avoid the consequences of sin. So I side with the first statement with the understanding that sin comes with a very high price even though Christ has redeemed you of your sin.
Its hard to understand.. and I dont fully grasp it.
We have been redeemed from sin by the Cross. We are being redeemed by the work of the Spirit within us (i.e. conviction, maturity, grace, etc.). We will be fully redeemed by the second coming, in witch all things will be made perfect and complete.
That is what I can come up with from these statements. But for some reason, it just has a hard time sinking it. it sounds true, I think its true. But I still ponder it so.
The concepts you describe are:
- justification
- sanctification
- glorification
They're big theological words, but a study of their definitions will reveal their use for the descriptions you've provided in your post.
1. We are justified by Christ and no longer sit in the seat of the condemned.
2. We are being sanctified in the sense of daily being made to conform to the image of Christ.
3. We will one day be glorified as Paul describes in Romans, i.e. "the day we will receive our resurrected bodies and are perfectly fitted for existence in the eternal state."
This is the Gospel; and redemption is present in all three, as you described - hard to understand, yes.
What a concept!
Now what I'm astounded by is the amount of God's soveriegn grace! Was it just enought to justify? No! was it just enough to sanctify? No! He lavishes it on us (Eph. 1)! God is good because God is abundantly gracious. The greatest miracle of all? The miracle of redemption! That is grace glorified through the gospel! Amen!
